What is testosterone - Increase Testosterone

Testosterone is the primary male hormone which is also responsible for the overall health and well-being of a male. It is one of the steroid hormones in the Androgen group of hormones. It is produced by gonads by synthesis of cholesterol in the body.

The amount of testosterone to be created and released is regulated by the pituitary gland and hypothalamus. They also determine the time when the hormone has to be released. This signal is passed through chemical signalling mechanism in the body. Female body also produces this hormone but is very little quantities.

In males, it is the Leydig cells in the testicles that are responsible for testosterone synthesis. In females, this job is done by Thecal cells in the ovaries. Testosterone is the most important hormone in the male body and is majorly responsible for sperm production through sertoli cells in the testes.

Lack of testosterone can cause:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Disruptive cognitive processes
  • Reduced interest in sex
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Sleep disorders

Testosterone levels are considered as low if it is less than 3000 nano-grams per liter; however there are ways to increase testosterone.

The role of Testosterone

Testosterone is the most important hormone for the male body. It aids in growth of muscle and makes the body stronger. Many men, mostly body builders and sportsmen look for supplements that contain or catalyze the growth of this hormone in the body. It is an anabolic steroid hormone and it not only helps in bringing strength and mass in the body, it is also given for infertility problems and erectile dysfunction.

Testosterone is also of great use in maintaining good bone density and strengthening of bones. It helps the bone in maturing and also reduces the chances of osteoporosis. Testosterone supplements are also given to women in older age to sustain their bone density and attain strength because bones tend to get weaker after a certain age. These supplements contain synthetically created hormone available in variety of forms.

Testosterone is the primary sex organ of the male body and is responsible for penis enlargement, scrotum growth, hair growth, deepening of voice, body odor and development of other male characteristics during puberty. If there is sufficient testosterone available in the body, the body is active and feelings like anxiety and depression stay away.

Testosterone also helps in improving concentration and gives an overall feeling of health. Amount of testosterone in the body rises at the age of puberty and remains till the age of 40, after which it begins to fall.
